Why many people lost faith in Nasheed's administration

Nasheed asked his cabinet to resign en masse and re-appointed them but the parliamnent reject many such nomination. He tried to make sale of alcohol legal in local areas but the public protested aggressively. He promised to solve the dollar shortage issue but it backfired - his economic measures made lives of the locals harder and more miserable. Thus, he was proved a bad strategist.

Many promises he made during the presidential election remain unfulfilled. He started on housing projects but the premiums are too high. He said his housing projects will ensure locals will not have to pay more than 20% of his or her salary to get a proper dwelling but it only remained as a fantasy. He established an obsolete transport system with dhoanis while Maldivian longed for a sophisticated transport system of seaplane network subsidied by the government.

Nasheed came to power with so much support and people had high hopes. Majority of people voted for a better change. However, when he couldn't deliver his promises people began to lose faith in him. His close supporters began to criticise his administration. When his administration was compared with that of Maumoon time many people saw no difference. The service delivery of the public sector was poor and corruption was rampant.

During the presidential election and upon getting elected Nasheed promised the public that he would not meddle with religious issues. He admitted that he does not have a very good knowledge on the subject. However, he reneged his promise and started to criticise Shariah and prophetic traditions on the public radio. He put to the public the question of building temples in Maldives and abolishing Shariah based punishments.

These actions of his were seen with suspicion by many people. Then he tried to allow sale of alcohol in the local areas which met with aggressive protests. Yet, he did not heed a lesson. Instead, he went ahead with similar controversial programmes such as inviting UN Human Rights Ambassador to ask the parliament to abolish Shariah based punishments and declaring part of inhabited land as uninhabited land to allow sales of alcohol as part of city hotels.

A sensible man would say Nasheed has played politics all bad and due to his own actions he has gone down from a popular leader to a highly unpopular figure. Of course he also did many good things but the bad things outweighted them.
