Parliament must not be impeded: IPU

Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) stressed today that Parliament must not be impeded by anyone and should be allowed to function in a conducive environment.In a press conference held at Nalahiyaa Hotel today, the IPU director of programs Mr. Martin Chungong reiterated that the Parliament must preserve its integrity and dignity and must seize the initiative that fosters dialogue which is the only remedy to resolve the current political impasse in the country.

An IPU delegation had also been in the Maldives when the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) had stymied the opening session of the Parliament by preventing President Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik from addressing the assembly revisited the country as the Parliament had been rescheduled to convene on Monday.

Chunghong who had been actively involved to resolve the conflict that erupted inside the Parliament on March 1, further stated that IPU would not condone any incitements or acts of violence and urged all responsible stakeholders to refrain from resorting to such actions. read more
